Health Care and Human Services Professionals

RELEASED: March 27, 2007

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Continuing Education/UW-Extension will present two programs designed for nurses, social workers, psychologists, counselors, clergy and others interested in improving their understanding of personal power and courage.

"Managing Power Dynamics in Therapy: Strategies to Bring Change" will be held Thursday, June 7. The focus of the program is on deepening understanding of interpersonal dynamics in everyday lives, especially those involving power, control and responsibility. Topics covered include self-protection, defense mechanism, the power of secrets and lies, identifying victims thought patterns, equity of power, and control.

"Discovering Bravery in Anxious Times" will be held Friday, June 8. The purpose of the workshop is to increase understanding of the relationship between fear and bravery, the physiological nature of true fear, the impact of fear on everyday functioning and choice making, and the nature and origins of false fear. Topics include understanding bravery relative to fear, anxiety and worry; bravery as the counter to fear; actions which lead to and result from bravery; and the psychologically significant characteristics of bravery.

Dr. Terrence W. Barrett, a licensed psychologist in full-time practice in Fargo, N.D., will conduct both programs. He has presented seminars on a variety of current therapy issues and is the author of "Life After Suicide: A Survivor's Experience".

Both programs will begin at 9 a.m. and conclude at 4:15 p.m. and be held at the Best Western Trail Lodge & Suites in Eau Claire. The fee for each program is $159. Discounted fees are $145 per person for those registering by May 17; $145 for two or more registering together (registrations must be received at the same time); or $290 per person if registering for both programs (registrations must be received at the same time).
