UW-Eau Claire's Jazz Fest Set for
March 30-31 at UW-Eau Claire

Jazz Festival logoEAU CLAIRE — Some of this country's finest jazz musicians will perform at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's 40th Annual Jazz Festival Friday and Saturday, March 30-31. The festival is bringing jazz greats Kevin Mahogany, Stanley Jordan and Benny Green to the UW-Eau Claire campus.

Mahogany is a vocalist that Newsweek called "the standout jazz vocalist of his generation." He has recorded on the Warner Bros. and Telarc labels.

Jordan is a leader in the development of the touch technique for playing guitar. He has made numerous appearances as a guest artist on The Tonight Show and David Letterman and was the first artist to be signed by the rejuvenated Blue Note Records label in 1985. Jordan is also a spokesperson for the American Music Therapy Association.

Green, a pianist, has toured and recorded with Betty Carter, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Freddie Hubbard, Diana Krall and others. He has recorded several solo CDs on the Criss Cross, Blue Note and Telarc labels.

Friday and Saturday will feature festival concerts with Mahogany and Green performing on Friday and Jordan and Green performing on Saturday, as well as the festival's Honor Bands and the nationally recognized UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble I. The concerts will be held in the auditorium at Memorial High School, with a pre-concert show starting at 7 p.m. Friday and at 6:30 p.m. Saturday. Both evening concerts will begin one half hour after the pre-concerts.

Friday, March 30, will begin with college big band and combo performance critiques at 8 a.m. and will continue throughout the afternoon. Continuing the festival's tradition of excellence with an educational focus, the day includes various clinics led by visiting artists and professionals in respective areas. From 3-4:30 p.m. Mahogany and Green will hold a master class.

Saturday will kick off "Middle and High School Day" with middle and high school big band and combo performance critiques and also will feature workshops and clinics throughout the day. There will be a Special Host Big Band Concert from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Also on Saturday, Jordan and Green will hold a master class from 3-4:15 p.m. The 40th Anniversary Celebration with Shell Lake Arts Center All-Stars will start at noon, and at 4:30 p.m. there will be a special tribute to the Shell Lake Arts Center, featuring UW-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble II.

All performances, clinics, workshops and master classes during the day are free of charge and open to the public. Event sponsors include Shell Lake Arts Center, Holiday Inn and Quality Inn.

Tickets for Friday and Saturday evening concerts are $12 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. For ticket information for these performances, call the University Service Center at 715-836-3727.
