American Cancer Relay for Life
Set for April 20-21 at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: March 7, 2007

Relay For Life bannerEAU CLAIRE — Members of Colleges Against Cancer are organizing this year's American Cancer Relay for Life event to be held from 6 p.m. Friday, April 20, until 6 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at the McPhee Ade Olson Center Track of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire upper campus.

Relay for Life is an overnight event that unites the community in a common effort to raise funds for cancer research, education, advocacy and patient services. Teams of 8-15 people take turns running or walking around a track as they enjoy music, food, fun and activities. Money is raised through team commitment fees of $150 or $10 per team member. Every year the funds raised help bring the American Cancer Society closer to eliminating the disease.

CAC member Chelsea Budzisz said organizers are hoping to sign up 73 student teams and four faculty teams of 8-15 people to raise money at this year's event. Last year 50 teams raised approximately $50,000.

The event will begin with an opening ceremony at 6 p.m. to introduce the American Cancer Society and the goals of Relay for Life. At 6:30 p.m. cancer survivors will kick off a survivor ceremony with a lap around the track. Lighted luminaries decorated with names and photos of those who lost their battles with cancer and those who survived will light the way for walkers. The event will close with one last opportunity for cancer survivors and their caregivers to walk the track and extend appreciation to all relay participants.

Honorary faculty speaker Dr. Todd Hostager, professor of marketing and management, as well as an honorary student speaker will be present at the event.

Sponsored by Biolife, the event also includes an all-night DJ, dance lessons from Two 2 Tango, and late night spinning classes. Activities and other contests with prizes will occur throughout the night. Free food will be provided.
