UW-Eau Claire to Host National Webcast
on Access to Government Information

RELEASED: March 6, 2007

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will take part in "Sunshine Week 2007: Closed Doors; Open Democracies?," a national dialogue on public access to government information and accountability that will be webcast to sites around the country from the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

The impact of government suppression and manipulation of scientific information on public health and safety is one of the topics to be covered. The purpose of the program is to call attention to why openness in government is important to everyone.

Ira Flatow, of National Public Radio's "Science Friday," will serve as the program's moderator. A panel of experts will discuss the issues, video clips will illustrate discussion points, there will be time for questions and comments, and the program will conclude with specific ideas for citizen actions. Telephone and e-mail connections at host sites will allow members of the audience to contact panelists during and immediately after the dialogue.

McIntyre Library registered as a webcast host site for this program on open government and secrecy so that residents of the Eau Claire area would be able to view and participate in this important national discussion. The webcast will take place from noon to 1:30 p.m. (Central Daylight Time) Monday, March 12, in L2023 of McIntyre Library. The event is free and open to the public.

Local sponsors include the William D. McIntyre Library, UW-Eau Claire and The Eau Claire Big Read.

National Sponsors are the American Association of Law Libraries, American Library Association, Association of Research Libraries, League of Women Voters, National Coalition Against Censorship, National Freedom of Information Coalition, National Press Club, Special Libraries Association, OpenTheGovernment.org, Sunshine Week, and the Union of Concerned Scientists.
