UW-Eau Claire to Offer Series on
Human Resource Legal Issues

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Small Business Development Center and the office of Continuing Education will offer a series of three seminars to help small business owners, managers, and human resource professionals hire and manage a productive workforce with minimal legal risk.

  • "Employment: Hiring and Firing" will be offered 8:30 a.m. to noon, Thursday, May 3, and will be taught by Roger Jones, Human Resource Management Services, Rochester, Minn. Participants will learn how to hire employees in a manner that avoids potential future problems and legal exposure. They also will learn how to terminate employees and avoid liability through proper documentation, termination meetings and exit interviews.
  • "Writing Your Employee Handbook" will be offered from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, May 3. This session covers how to effectively communicate personnel policies and avoid common pitfalls. Participants will learn how to use employee handbooks to ensure consistent treatment of employees and to promote enhanced productivity and morale. This session is also taught by Jones.
  • "Top 10 Most Common HR Mistakes and Hot Topics" will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to noon, Thursday, May 10, and is taught by Steve Weld, president of Weld, Riley, Prenn & Ricci, S.C., in Eau Claire. Participants will learn about the most recent changes in human resource law, as well as how to avoid the top 10 most common mistakes made in HR management today.

The cost to attend each half day session held at the Plaza Hotel & Suites is $79, or $199 for all three sessions. Fees include instruction, course materials, Continuing Education Units (CEUs), and refreshments.
