UW-Eau Claire's award-winning National Youth Sports Program is under way for the 27th consecutive year. More than 400 Chippewa Valley youth ages 10-16 attend the free five-week camp, which runs weekdays through July 13 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. (No camp is scheduled July 4-6.) Program activities include basketball, softball, tennis, football, soccer, a challenge ropes course and special events. Participants also learn about drugs and alcohol, health and nutrition, higher education and math and science. For more information about NYSP, contact Lisa Schuetz, NYSP activity director, at 715-210-6624 or schuetlm@uwec.edu.

Several of this year's NYSP staff members also are former NYSP participants and know the benefits of the program firsthand. Matt Heck, Sean Szydel and Jason Henderson all participated in NYSP as youths and have returned this summer as counselors. Both Szydel and Henderson also worked as NYSP volunteers in previous years. Heck is a graduate of both Memorial High School and UW-Eau Claire; Szydel is an Altoona High School graduate and a student at Chippewa Valley Technical College; Henderson is a graduate of UW-Stout. Heck, Szydel and Henderson can be contacted at the following phone numbers: Heck, 715-379-3965; Szydel, 715-831-0775; Henderson, 715-829-0681.
