EAU CLAIRE — A University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire alumna, who loved fashion and spent more than 60 years collecting dresses, purses and shoes, made an estate gift to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation to increase her fully endowed scholarship for students in social work.

Virgelee LeDue, who died in April 2006, left $16,529 from her estate to the already endowed Elwood and Virgelee LeDue Scholarship at UW-Eau Claire. The gift will allow her fund to annually provide a $1,000 scholarship for a junior, senior or graduate student in social work who has a GPA of 3.0 or better and financial need.

"The social work department has a limited number of scholarships available for deserving students," said Carol Langer, chair of the UW-Eau Claire social work department. "We are particularly grateful for the gift of the Elwood and Virgelee LeDue Scholarship. The student who receives this award will be supported while pursuing academic excellence and a professional social work career. This gift also recognizes student leadership."

LeDue grew up in Neillsville and graduated from what was then the Eau Claire State Teachers College in 1947 with a degree in physical science education. In 1971, she earned a master's degree in communication and speech from UW-Eau Claire.

LeDue taught 30 years, including 19 years as a biology teacher at North High School. She was one of the founders of the Chippewa Valley Theatre Guild. LeDue was an animal lover. In her later years when she no longer had dogs, she spent many hours walking and caring for other people's dogs. LeDue married Elwood LeDue in 1948. Elwood LeDue died in 1987.

"Virgelee embodied the notion of living life to its fullest," said Kimera Way, executive director of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. "She loved teaching and loved being around young people. It is very fitting that her life's passions have helped support this scholarship that will help young people in the future."

The LeDue gift to UW-Eau Claire is recognized as a contribution to Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's comprehensive campaign to benefit UW-Eau Claire's people and programs, which will conclude at the end of 2007.
