Tip Sheet for the week of June 4, 2007

RELEASED: June 4, 2007

Story Idea
Local and national experts will discuss a potential labor shortage in western Wisconsin during a June 6 conference in Eau Claire. "Fact: 2012: Labor Shortage in Western Wisconsin" will run from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m. at Florian Gardens. The discussion will focus on attracting and retaining knowledgeable, experienced and skilled workers. Keynote speaker Erica Whittlinger, co-founder of Minneapolis-based TheReFirement Group and a long-time regular on the "Sound Money" public radio program, will discuss the impact of demographic shifts on business, identify how life circumstances shaped the baby boomer generation, and show how organizations can retain experienced workers. Economist Terry Ludeman will present demographic information on 50-plus workers in western Wisconsin and describe how retiring workers will impact regional workforces. U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl, chair of the Special Committee on Aging, will discuss issues that affect older workers. Representatives from local businesses will share strategies for retaining and hiring 50-plus workers. And area retirees who have re-entered the workforce will talk about why they have left jobs, why they have stayed at jobs and what they look for in an employer.
