EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire professor emeritus of chemistry Melvin Gleiter recently gave $5,750 to bring the scholarship fund established in his honor to the $10,000 total necessary to endow a scholarship.

The Melvin and Lois Gleiter Scholarship, established in 1990, is awarded to two junior or senior students pursuing a major in biochemistry/molecular biology at UW-Eau Claire.

"It's a very important award that explicitly recognizes the biochemistry/molecular biology major," said Dr. Scott Hartsel, chair of the chemistry department. "The award transcends the financial benefit and has become a status symbol to students. Receiving an award recognizes that they are the top students in a very outstanding group of peers. The award is earnestly competed for by the students."

Gleiter, who taught for 27 years, joined the faculty in 1964 after working as a research biochemist for Monsanto Chemical Co., where his research involved the development of agricultural herbicides. He earned a bachelor's degree from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, and master's and doctoral degrees from Purdue University. During the Korean War, he served as a research chemist in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps.

"It is really a labor of love to support a fund that recognizes students from the major I helped develop while providing leadership for the department," said Gleiter, who was chair of the chemistry department from 1987 until his retirement in 1991. "Students I had over 16 years ago are still contributing to the fund. It is really gratifying. I'm also so impressed by the quality of students who have received it."

The scholarship is named for Gleiter and his late first wife, Lois.

Additional gifts to the endowed scholarship may be made by contacting the UW-Eau Claire Foundation at 715-836-5630.
