EAU CLAIRE — Acoustic jazz, blues and folk artist Darlyne Cain will open the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Summer Session Programs for the week of July 23. Her free outdoor concert will begin Monday at 7 p.m. on the Central Campus Mall. Audience members are invited to bring blankets or folding chairs for lawn seating. Refreshments will be sold, and popcorn is free.

A musician based in Chicago, Darlyne Cain is an international artist with songs born of experiences gained from traveling, living and performing throughout the world. On stage she is best known for her smooth alto voice and musicianship on guitar and piano. What sets her apart from her contemporaries is her ability to blend different cultures through jazzy, pop chord progressions encircled by well-crafted melodies.

Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock takes an irreverent look at the fast-food corporations that have molded American culture and the politics that have combined to make us the fattest nation in the world. Rated PG, the 100-minute documentary will be shown at 7 p.m. all three evenings in Davies Theatre. Admission is free.

The screening Tuesday, July 24, will be preceded by an informal discussion led by nutritionist Diane Dressel. From 6 to 7 p.m. in the Skylight Lounge of Davies Center, Dressel will discuss and demonstrate ways to lighten your diet and make wise food choices. Free beverages and healthy, locally grown snacks will be provided.

Familiar from her many local TV presentations on healthy eating, Dressel received a bachelor of science degree in biology from UW-Eau Claire, and a masters degree in food science and nutrition from UW-Stout. She has held various positions as a dietician for Luther Midelfort since 1977, and has specialized in obesity treatment since 1985.

Funded by the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Summer Session Programs continue through Aug. 2. A complete schedule is available from the Activities and Programs office, Davies Center 133, 715-836-4833, or online.
