Tip Sheet for the week of July 2, 2007

RELEASED: July 2, 2007

Story Idea
Students at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire contributed a "conservative estimate" of 86,000 community service hours in the Chippewa Valley during the 2005-06 academic year, and those hours had a value of more than $1.3 million, reports Dr. Don Mowry, director of UW-Eau Claire's Center for Service-Learning. In all, students at UW-Eau Claire and other Campus Compact member colleges and universities contributed an estimated 377 million hours of service in their communities, according to an annual member survey by Campus Compact, a national coalition of more than 1,000 college and university presidents representing some six million students who are committed to fulfilling the civic purposes of higher education. The list of community partners to which UW-Eau Claire students provide volunteer services includes 1,527 organizations, the majority of which are in the Chippewa Valley. For more information about the regional impact of UW-Eau Claire's service-learning program, contact Mowry at 715-836-4649 or dmowry@uwec.edu.
