UW-Eau Claire's Singing Statesmen
Release Seventh Compact Disc

RELEASED: Jan. 30, 2007

Cover of The Singing Statesmen's 'A Testament' CDEAU CLAIRE — The Singing Statesmen of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, one of the premier university male choruses in the United States, recently released their seventh compact disc, titled "A Testament."

Director of The Singing Statesmen Dr. Gary Schwartzhoff describes the recording as a testament to different types of sacrifices — those of an individual, a race or a nation. Each of the songs performed tells the story of one of these types of human experiences. Examples include "The Testament of Freedom," Randall Thompson's composition in honor of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Thomas Jefferson; "The Ballad of Little Musgrave and Lady Barnard," a piece dedicated to a British officer who organized a choir of fellow prisoners while in a World War II prisoner-of-war camp; "Poor Man Lazarus," a Jester Hairston arrangement of an African American folksong; and favorites such as "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "The Star Spangled Banner." Also featured are several commissioned works, including "Weepe Not," the fourth in a series of works composed by Jackson Berkey expressly for The Singing Statesmen. Sixteen compositions in all are featured.

According to Schwartzhoff, much of the music included on the disc was performed by The Statesmen in 2005-06, when the ensemble celebrated its 40th anniversary, and recorded in 2006-07. The exception is the "Testament of Freedom," which was performed by the 1992-93 ensemble.

Piano accompaniment for this disc was provided by Heather Wunsch Tank, a 1994 graduate of UW-Eau Claire; junior Meghan Quinn, Shoreview, Minn.; and senior James Hahn, Platteville.

All seven of The Statesmen's compact disc recordings are available for purchase through the UW-Eau Claire department of music and theatre arts. For more information or to obtain an order form, visit the music and theatre arts Web site.
