EAU CLAIRE — An endowed scholarship for Beaver Dam High School graduates who plan to attend the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire has been established by the spouse of a UW-Eau Claire alumnus and former assistant director of the university's Career Services Office.

Dr. Sharon Ehrmeyer, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, wanted to honor her husband, Jerry Ehrmeyer, who graduated from UW-Eau Claire in 1960 with a bachelor's degree in sociology and in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in social science.

Jerry Ehrmeyer had a long and distinguished career at UW-Eau Claire. From 1971-78 Ehrmeyer served as an assistant professor of psychology; he then was assistant director of the Career Services Office from 1978 until his retirement in 1996. He died in December 2005.

"Jerry had a deep love and respect for higher education and I want that legacy to live on through this scholarship," said Sharon Ehrmeyer. "We grew up in Beaver Dam so it seemed fitting that the award should go to a student from there."

The scholarship will provide a minimum award of $1,000 and is renewable for the sophomore year provided the student maintains good academic standing. The scholarship targets students who have a solid academic background and a wide range of interests. Financial need will also be considered.

"Jerry will be remembered for his dedication and service to UW-Eau Claire, for his voracious reading habits and for his humor," said Carole Halberg. "He provided guidance for liberal arts and other undergraduate students, and this scholarship will ensure that his legacy of concern for student success lives on in perpetuity."

The Ehrmeyer gift to UW-Eau Claire is recognized as a contribution to Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's comprehensive campaign to benefit UW-Eau Claire's people and programs.
