RELEASED: Jan. 23, 2007

music camp photoEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire department of music and theatre arts and the Office of Continuing Education/UW-Extension announce a new residential music camp for high school students. Clearwater Music Camps will be held July 15-20 on the UW-Eau Claire campus, offering performance groups in choir, musical theatre and percussion. All classes are taught or supervised by UW-Eau Claire music and theatre arts faculty.

Clearwater Music Camps are designed to help students grow as performing artists, prepare them for auditions and competitions, and enhance their overall understanding of music. Group rehearsals, instruction and music theory classes will culminate in a final concert performance. Faculty also will offer private voice or percussion lessons.

"Clearwater Music Camp is the perfect summer camp experience for students who think they might want to study music in college," said Alan Rieck, assistant professor of music at UW-Eau Claire. "It's a chance to explore that option and meet other students with similar interests."

Outside of class, Clearwater Music Camps offer a typical camp experience, including recreational and campus activities. Students also will attend performances by student and faculty concert groups.

"A summer experience on a college campus can be life changing for a young person," said Libby Thurston, youth outreach specialist for Continuing Education. "We hope that our music camps foster a lifelong interest in music and help students see if a career in music might be a fit for them."

Clearwater Music Camps are for residential students only. Students will live with a roommate in the residence halls throughout the program, supervised by adult counselors. Most counselors are UW-Eau Claire undergraduates who hope to teach at the secondary level upon graduation.

Program cost is $485 per student. Scholarships are available to Wisconsin residents with demonstrated financial need. Registration will begin in February.

To register, for additional program information, or to request reasonable accommodations for disabilities, please call 715-836-3636/toll-free 866-893-2423, use the Wisconsin Relay System (711), visit the Continuing Education Web site, or email ce@uwec.edu.
