McIntyre Library to Host Event to
Celebrate 50th Birthday of 'The Cat in the Hat'

RELEASED: Feb. 23, 2007

Cat in the HatEAU CLAIRE — McIntyre Library and the Reading Partners program will co-host a Dr. Seuss party event celebrating the 50th birthday of "The Cat in the Hat" to support literacy in the community. The event will run from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 1.

The party will begin in the Instructional Media Center in the lower level of McIntyre Library, but activities will take place throughout the building. K-5 children who participate in the Reading Partners program have been invited to attend with their partners, but the entire UW-Eau Claire community, including students, faculty and staff with children, are welcome to attend.

Activities include screening of Dr. Seuss cartoons, Seuss bingo, a library scavenger hunt and other games. Refreshments will be served.

Dr. Seuss Enterprises and Random House Children's books have teamed up with First Book to organize Project 236, a national literacy initiative. Dr. Seuss' "The Cat in the Hat," written with only 236 different words, inspired a campaign to ask kids, parents, grandparents, caregivers, teachers, librarians, and community leaders how they can make a difference.

For every e-birthday card sent to the Cat in the Hat through the Dr. Seuss Web site, Random House Children's Books will donate one new book to First Book, a national nonprofit organization with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books.

Also, March 2 is the National Education Association's Read Across America day.

For more information about the Dr. Seuss 50th birthday celebration for "The Cat in the Hat," contact Kati Tvaruzka, education reference librarian, 715-836-4522, or Lucianne Boardman, Reading Partners coordinator, 715-836-5964.
