UW-Eau Claire Math Department Announces
Winners of Regional Math Meet for High Schoolers

RELEASED: Feb. 21, 2007

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire department of mathematics held the 25th annual regional Mathematics Meet for high school students on Saturday, Feb. 17.

Chancellor Levin-Stankevich welcomed thirty-three teams and sponsors from the following high schools and towns: Altoona, La Crosse, Black River Falls, Chippewa Falls, Durand, Ellsworth, Gilmanton, McDonell, Memorial, Menomonie, Mondovi, North, Regis, Rib Lake, Royall, Spencer, Stanley-Boyd, Tomahawk, and West Salem.

In the large school division, AAA, the Discrete Fleet from Eau Claire Memorial was the first place team winner. The Discrete Fleet team featured Nicole Olson, Ryan Harp, Larry Chan, Matias Valero, Yusong Zhou and Sam Koehn. The Eau Claire Memorial team, Deriving Force, took second place.

Nicole Olson of Eau Claire Memorial took first place in Class AAA individual honors and was offered a UW-Eau Claire scholarship for 4 credit hours. Ryan Harp of Eau Claire Memorial High School and Ben Magyar of Chippewa Falls High School tied for second place honors; each was offered a 3 credit hour UW-Eau Claire scholarship. Sam Koehn of Eau Claire Memorial took fourth place and was offered a 1 credit hour scholarship.

In the medium school AA division team event the La Crosse Aquinas team, Axes, and Altoona High Schools team, The Calculators, tied for first place. Sponsored by Chuck Schmidt, the Axes members include Peter Kieffer, Sreenath Pillai, William Hayman, Megan Jehring, Simon Weisse and Doug Farmer. The Calculators consisted of Cody Jolin, Gregory Nemec, Kristopher Phillips, Adam Thorson, Kristi Weinmeister and Chanoksuda Manakasettarn, with team sponsors Kris Phillips and Lori Olson.

Anthony Kirckof of Stanley-Boyd High School took first place in Class AA individual honors. Lewis Owen of Durand High School took second place with Jacob Inda of La Crosse Aquinas taking third. Fourth place went to Altoona High School student Gregory Nemec. These first four award winners were each offered UW-Eau Claire scholarships for 4-, 3-, 2- and 1- credits respectively.

The Eau Claire Regis High School team, Mathletes, took first place honors in the small school division A. Teddy Schaefer, Yousef Ahmed, John Folstad, Kurt Roubal, Jeff Henriksen and Dan Wirz formed the Mathletes, with Mark Johnson as team sponsor. Second place in division A went to the Chippewa Falls McDonell High School team, Mackmaticians I, sponsored by Carolyn Peloquin.

A four-way tie for first place in the individual awards for small schools, division A, resulted in first place and 4-credit UW-Eau Claire scholarships awarded to John Folstad of Eau Claire Regis, Andrew Swoboda of Chippewa Falls McDonell, and Teddy Schaefer and Brian Pellat, both of Eau Claire Regis.

Scholarships are funded by a grant from Xcel Energy to the UW-Eau Claire department of mathematics.
