EAU CLAIRE — Ceramics students from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire department of art & design are pitching in to help fight hunger in the Chippewa Valley. The students, under the direction of assistant professor Susan O'Brien, are donating 200 hand-made ceramic bowls to Feed My People Food Bank for the upcoming "Empty Bowls" fundraiser. Additional bowls are being donated by both professional potters and high school ceramics students from the Eau Claire area.

Empty Bowls is a benefit serving soup, specialty breads and desserts for lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and for dinner from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1314 East Lexington, Eau Claire. The soups are being donated by Fox Run, Houligan's, the Eau Claire Country Club, Randy's Family Restaurant; the bread is from Great Harvest Bread, Co.; and area churches and volunteers are providing desserts. Last year, more than 100 businesses sponsored the event.

Ticket prices are $15 for a meal and a hand-designed ceramic bowl, $8 for a meal alone, and $40 for a family pack of two bowls and a meal for up to five individuals. Children under age 10 eat free with a paying adult. Bowl numbers are limited; advance ticket purchase is recommended. Tickets are available at Trinity Lutheran Church, UW-Eau Claire Service Center and Feed My People Food Bank.

Student coordinators of the project at UW-Eau Claire are seniors Leigh Yakaides, Marshfield, and Lauren Faust, Verona. In addition to involvement with Empty Bowls, university students sponsor Hunger Week on campus each fall to raise money and awareness to help fight hunger.

Feed My People Food Bank is a food distribution center that supplies over 1 million pounds of food to 51 area agencies and charitable organizations each year. The food Feed My People distributes provides approximately 81,000 meals in West-Central Wisconsin every month.
