Tip Sheet for the week of Feb. 12, 2007

RELEASED: Feb. 12, 2007

Story Idea
A nursing class this week at UW-Eau Claire will help the staff of an Eau Claire health agency and university nursing students better understand how they can support people with acute or chronic mental health issues. Graduate students Ann Recine and Cara Wadman and nursing professor Susan Peck will teach a one-day class on nursing interventions with clients who have mental health disorders. The class will include students enrolled in the university's Accelerated Nursing Program and 40 staff members from Community Health Partnership Inc., a local non-profit care management organization that integrates health and long-term care funding and services for frail elderly and physically disabled adults. Recine and Wadman have experience working with mental health clients and both are doing clinical work for their graduate nursing program at CHP. Recently CHP began accepting clients with a primary mental health diagnosis. The class will allow graduate students with mental health expertise to complete a required part of their graduate program while sharing important information with other students and staff from CHP. CHP clients and their families will benefit from staff having increased knowledge and skills relating to mental health issues. Organizers say programs that benefit nursing students and professionals are increasingly important given the shortage of nurses and nursing faculty. For more information about the class, contact Peck at 715-836-5375 or pecksd@uwec.edu.
