Spectator Named
State's Best College Newspaper

RELEASED: Feb. 12, 2007

EAU CLAIRE — For the second time in five years, the Wisconsin Newspaper Association has named the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's campus newspaper, The Spectator, the state's best college newspaper.

Current Spectator Editor in Chief Mark Schaaf, a senior print journalism major from Prairie du Chien, accepted the "general excellence" plaque Friday in Lake Delton at the WNA's annual convention.

"This is a campus paper that hits on all cylinders," WNA judges said in a published critique, "tackling tough issues, with a consistent design and interesting features stories, backed by a strong editorial voice."

The Spectator, which has been UW-Eau Claire's official student newspaper since 1923, also won the WNA's top collegiate award in 2003.

This year's individual WNA award winners from The Spectator were Jake McCormick, a sophomore print journalism major from Stoughton, who won a certificate of merit for sports writing, and Simon Okiror, a Pine Bluff, Ark., native now attending graduate school at the University of Denver. Okiror won a certificate of merit for advertising.

In past years, Spectator staffers have won many more individual awards without capturing the coveted general excellence award, said Mike Dorsher, an assistant professor in the department of communication and journalism who serves as the student paper's faculty adviser. This year, the two daily newspapers at UW-Madison and the larger staffs at UW-Milwaukee and Marquette University won most of the individual awards, but The Spectator, which publishes twice a week, garnered the grand prize.

"This year's general excellence award recognizes a great team effort by The Spectator staffers," Dorsher said. "It shows they're really putting their readers first, not themselves."
