Oscar Nominated 'Little Miss Sunshine'
to Screen at UW-Eau Claire Feb. 22-25

RELEASED: Feb. 8, 2007

scene from Little Miss SunshineEAU CLAIRE — "Little Miss Sunshine" will screen at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Feb. 22-25 and may well win the Academy Award for Best Motion Picture of the Year on the last night of its run. The crowd-pleasing Sundance favorite will be presented at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.

"This indie, a sweet, tart and smart satire about a family of losers in a world obsessed with winning, is an authentic crowd pleaser," wrote David Ansen in Newsweek. "There's been no more satisfying American comedy this year."

The film follows the endearingly fractured Hoover family as it treks from Albuquerque to the Little Miss Sunshine pageant in Redondo Beach, Calif., to fulfill the deepest wish of seven-year-old Olive (Oscar nominee Abigail Breslin). Along the way the family must deal with setbacks, heartbreaks and an unreliable Volkswagen bus, all leading up to the surreal Little Miss Sunshine competition itself. The ensemble cast includes Greg Kinnear, Paul Dano, Oscar nominee Alan Arkin, Toni Collette and Steve Carell.

The San Francisco Chronicle called the film a "sly, near-perfect comedy [that] seems to come from nowhere. It's a first feature for Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris as well as [Oscar nominated] screenwriter Michael Arndt, an awesomely original voice in a profession that rewards imitation. I like to think 'Little Miss Sunshine' dropped from celluloid heaven as a sign that, despite continual evidence to the contrary, movie miracles still happen."

The 101-minute film is rated R.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727, in Davies Center's east lobby, and will be sold at the door.

The film is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate.
