RELEASED: Dec. 17, 2007
EAU CLAIRE — First Book, an international nonprofit, and Borders Group Inc., a global retailer, will work together for the third year on a holiday giving campaign.
Through Dec. 24, customers in Borders and Waldenbooks stores can donate to First Book. The funds will be converted to gift cards and distributed to local organizations affiliated with First Book to purchase books for the children they serve.
Since its founding in 1992, First Book has distributed more than 50 million books to children in low-income families.
First Book-Eau Claire, a college advisory board affiliate at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, includes volunteers from all sectors of the community who promote and facilitate the distribution of new books to literacy programs in the Eau Claire area. The advisory board will help distribute funds raised in the 2007 holiday giving campaign to local organizations.
Since 2005, First Book-Eau Claire has distributed more than 10,000 books to local programs serving low-income children, said Don Mowry, director of UW-Eau Claire's Center for Service-Learning and chair of the First Book-Eau Claire advisory board. The books have been distributed through organizations such as Western Dairyland Head Start, the Eau Claire Area School District's Reading Partner Program, Bolton Refuge House, Interfaith Hospitality-Beacon House, Eau Claire Area Hmong Mutual Assistance Association's Building Bridges Program, and Literacy Volunteers of the Chippewa Valley.
