This Year's Big Band Era Salute at UW-Eau Claire
to Include Two Special Tributes

RELEASED: Aug. 17, 2007

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire department of music and theatre arts will present "A Salute to the Big Bands," its annual Big Band Era concert and dance, at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 28, in Zorn Arena.

This year's event will feature two special tributes. Dr. Robert Baca, director of jazz studies at UW-Eau Claire and of UW-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensemble I, will perform on trumpet and lead Jazz Ensemble I in a salute to Doc Severinson, who is celebrating his 80th birthday this year. Percussionist Dr. Jeffery Crowell will lead Jazz Ensemble II in a tribute to Gene Krupa, America's ace drummer. As usual, the two award-winning ensembles will pull out all the stops as they perform many Big Band Era favorites and indulge in a little friendly rivalry. Two large dance floors are available for those who want to dance along, and local dancers and community singers also will perform.

Proceeds from "A Salute to the Big Bands" will provide support for activities in UW-Eau Claire's jazz studies area, which has received the Down Beat Magazine "Best College Big Band" Award five out of the last eight years, along with many individual awards. Jazz Ensemble I has recorded a CD each year for the past decade, with two nominated for a Grammy Award: "Jazz in Clear Water-Harpoon" and "Jazz in Clear Water-Things to Come." UW-Eau Claire also sustains one of the nation's oldest and largest jazz festivals and its efficient operation is managed by a large and active International Association of Jazz Educators student chapter.

Tickets are $12 for the general public; $10 for youth 17 and under and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff; and $8 for seniors 62 and over, organized groups of 10 or more, and UW-Eau Claire and UW System students. Tickets are now on sale at the University Service Center in Davies Center. Call 715- 836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC to request a brochure with more information and a ticket order form. Tickets can be charged by phone for an additional $3 fee. Patrons are requested to identify any special assistance needs when purchasing tickets.

Tickets also will be sold at the door as space allows.
