Mathematics students worked with the city of Owen to determine the minimum time required for an emergency evacuation of that community. The math model and computer program have contributed greatly to Owen's emergency planning. The student-faculty research team will present its work during Wisconsin's state conference for all emergency management officers in the fall. UW-Eau Claire will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its Juried Student Arts Show this week. The show will open April 26, with an opening reception from 7:30-9 p.m. in the Foster Gallery, Haas Fine Arts Center. A senior nursing major from Eau Claire will be among the honors students sharing their research during a luncheon from 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. April 26 in the Tamarack Room, Davies Center. Sarah Medrano's research is on cultural diversity in healthcare, with a focus on the Hispanic population in the U.S. healthcare system. Her first project focused on teaching hospital nurses how to care for Hispanic patients in a culturally sensitive way. In a second project, Medrano researched the prevalence of hypertension in Hispanic individuals. For details, contact Medrano at lundblsm@uwec.edu.

Washington Post editors Bob Kaiser and Bob Woodward will be the guest speakers at the 10th annual Ann Devroy Memorial Forum on April 26. The forum begins at 7:30 p.m. in Zorn Arena and will feature a live TV broadcast conversation with Woodward. Kaiser will be in Eau Claire to join in the conversation. Both journalists will take questions from the audience after their presentation. Story Idea
Students from France and Malaysia will participate in an International Roundtable titled "France Assimilating Immigrants: Islam in a traditionally Christian Nation." In recent years, there have been reports of violence in Paris suburbs. North African immigrants and their French-born children feel they haven't been treated fairly. There are many views on the topic, with some believing the government isn't doing enough to help new immigrants assimilate into French culture, and others believing the immigrants aren't willing to assimilate into the culture. The discussion will begin at 4 p.m. April 25 in the Ojibwa Room, Davies Center. Dr. Patrick Day, associate professor of French, will facilitate.

McIntyre Library will celebrate the Week of the Young Child April 22-28.
Kati Tvaruzka, assistant professor and education reference library, will lead story time at 10 a.m. April 25 in the library. The Week of the Young Child is celebrated nationwide by organizations that help to improve opportunities for young children. For details, contact Tvaruzka at 715-836-4522 or tvaruzke@uwec.edu.

Visiting Expert
Karen Solheim will be the speaker at the Kaleidoscope of Nursing Scholarship April 27.
Her talk is titled "Evidence-Based Practice in Global Health." She's worked in Thailand, Cambodia, Somalia and India. In response to Hurricane Katrina, she was a team leader for the American Refugee Committee, which helped with primary care delivery in Louisiana. Solheim will talk at 9 a.m. in Davies Theater.
