UW-Eau Claire to Hold First Ever
International Poetry Reading May 2

RELEASED: April 19, 2007

EAU CLAIRE — The department of foreign languages and the Center for International Education at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire will sponsor the first annual International Poetry Reading from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center.

The free event is being hosted by UW-Eau Claire's Annual English Festival, which runs April 30-May 4. All are invited.

Assistant professor of English and women's studies Audrey Fessler and associate professor of foreign languages Jeff Vahlbusch, who conceived and organized the event, invited students, faculty and staff of UW-Eau Claire, and community members to share the beauty of their native or other languages by submitting a favorite short poem to read aloud. Audience members will receive a booklet with all poems printed in their original languages, along with English translations.

Vahlbusch said that audience members will get to hear poems in 30 different languages, ancient and modern, from Arabic to Yoruba.

"We're thrilled by the community's response," Vahlbusch said. "We think it's going to be a magical evening."

Light refreshments will be provided.

For more information, contact Fessler at 715-836-3016 or fessleaa@uwec.edu, or Vahlbusch at 715-836-4490 or vahlbujb@uwec.edu.
