WAGE at UW-Eau Claire to Screen 'War Zone'
as Part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month

RELEASED: April 17, 2007

"Take Back the Night," a rally that provides people the opportunity to speak out against sexual assault and empower themselves and others, will follow the April 24 showing of "War Zone" and begin at 7 p.m. More information.

EAU CLAIRE — The Women's and Gender Equity Center at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will show the film "War Zone" at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, in Room 223 of Schneider Hall. The film will be followed by a discussion led by UW-Eau Claire professor of psychology and coordinator of women's studies Dr. Susan Turell.

"War Zone" is a documentary by filmmaker Maggie Hadleigh-West. In the documentary, Hadleigh-West confronts and questions men who harass her as she is walking down streets in various U.S. cities. The film personalizes the issue of harassment as it shows what harassing behavior looks and feels like to a woman.

"This film addresses power dynamics in the streets as well as safety, or lack thereof," said Rachel Hawkins, a WAGE staff member. "People will be educated about sexual harassment, able to discuss their own personal experiences and opinions on the subject, and hopefully feel empowered and inspired by the film."

Following the film, Turell will lead a discussion focusing on what happens when men threaten a woman's right to walk undisturbed down the street. Turell said that some of the topics that will be discussed include sexual 'street' harassment, power dynamics, impacts of 'street' harassment on male/female relationships and parallels to women's lives in Eau Claire.

The showing of the film "War Zone" is part of the events for Sexual Assault Awareness Month. "Take Back the Night," a rally that provides people the opportunity to speak out against sexual assault and empower themselves and others, will follow the showing of "War Zone" and begin at 7 p.m. at the Clock Tower on the Campus Mall.
