'Transamerica' to Screen at
UW-Eau Claire April 26-29

RELEASED: April 16, 2007

Transamerica posterEAU CLAIRE — "Transamerica" (2005), an original look at the modern American family, will screen Thursday-Sunday, April 26-29, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The film will be presented at 6 and 8:30 p.m. in Davies Theatre.

Oscar nominee and Golden Globe-winner Felicity Huffman stars as Bree, a pre-operative male-to-female transsexual who learns that she fathered a son 17 years ago. When her therapist insists that she face her past before surgery, Bree travels from Los Angeles to New York City to meet the young man, Toby (Kevin Zegers), and bail him out of jail. Unwilling to explain who she is, Bree lets him think she is a Christian caseworker sent to transport him to L.A. The drive across America is eye-opening for them both.

"On the big screen, 'Desperate Housewives' star Felicity Huffman often has been relegated to the supporting category of friend/sister/neighbor," wrote the Hollywood Reporter. "With the poignant and often deliriously funny road-trip feature 'Transamerica,' she steps into the challenging lead role of a solitary, preoperative transsexual and delivers an extraordinary portrait. The film marks an auspicious debut for writer-director Duncan Tucker, whose fresh, character-driven story-telling should make this an art house favorite. ... The transgender spin avoids gimmickry thanks to Tucker's deft touch and the subtle work of Huffman and the rest of the pitch-perfect cast, especially Kevin Zegers as the lost-and-found offspring."

The 103-minute film is rated R.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727, in Davies Center's east lobby, and will be sold at the door.

The film is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the Student Senate.
