Annual English Festival at UW-Eau Claire
Set for April 30-May 4

RELEASED: April 16, 2007

EAU CLAIRE — The English department at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will hold its annual English Festival April 30-May 4 at various locations across campus, including Davies Center and the Campus Mall.

The UW-Eau Claire English Festival is one of the largest student-run language arts festivals in the nation, featuring guest authors, lectures by English faculty members, student panels, capstone presentations, an international poetry reading and live music each day on the campus mall.

"Comma Sutra: Let Language Touch You" is the theme of this year's English Festival. Many of the presentations will focus on this theme and explore issues of love, romance and sexuality in texts. The festival will kick off at 7 p.m. Monday, April 30th, with a reading of poetry and fiction by UW-Eau Claire writers Allyson Loomis and Jon Loomis in The Cabin in Davies Center. More events will be held throughout the rest of the week, with the majority of student panels and capstone presentations taking place on Wednesday and Thursday, May 2-3.

A highlight of this year's English Festival is the appearance of Charles Baxter, Minnesota-born author of a number of short story, poetry and essay collections and novels, who will be reading excerpts from his upcoming book at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, in Davies Theatre, Davies Center. Baxter will speak on the erotic in literature at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, also in Davies Theatre.

"Baxter's stories are intelligent, original, gracefully written, always moving, frequently funny and — the rarest of compliments — wise," wrote Ron Hanson in The New York Times Book Review.

The finalized schedule with a complete listing of all English Festival events and presentations will be publicized within the coming weeks on the English department Web site.
