Wood and Strings Theatre to Present
Life-size Puppet Show at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: April 12, 2007

Wood and Strings TheatreEAU CLAIRE — "Out of the Mist a Dragon" — a romantic drama that uses life-size Bunraku puppets as well as masks, hand puppets and shadow puppets will be presented Tuesday, April 24, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Wood and Strings Theatre will present the final Artists Series event of the season at 7:30 p.m. in Schofield Auditorium.

"Adults bring their children because of the word 'puppet,'" says Wood and Strings Theatre's creator, Clarissa Lega. "But when they bring their children — and this is the great part for us — they are just as amazed as their children."

For four consecutive years the Tennessee-based company has performed to standing-room-only audiences at National Geographic Live! in Washington, D.C. Among the other venues to host the puppets recently are the Wolf Trap International Children's Festival, the Tribeca Performing Arts Center in New York, the Detroit Institute of Art, other arts centers and universities across the United States, and the Festival Nacional del Patrimonio in Colombia, South America. The performers have been teaching artists at the Lincoln Center Arts Institute in New York City.

Using elegant reproductions of the classic Bunraku puppets of Japan, "Out of the Mist ... a Dragon" follows a young man's journey of self-discovery. Reaching into the world of myth and legend, his encounters with folk puppets from North America, England and Indonesia give exotic glimpses of puppetry styles rarely seen in this country.

Tickets are $15 for the public, $13 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $5 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students. Tickets are available at the Service Center counter in the east lobby of Davies Center and also will be sold at the door.

Patrons may charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call 715-836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free 800-949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

In addition to its evening performance on April 24, Wood and Strings Theatre will present a school performance earlier in the day, followed by four concurrent puppet-making workshops for grade-school children. School performance tickets are $5. Workshop tickets are $4, and lunch is included. These outreach opportunities are supported in part by a grant from Xcel Energy. For information about these events and special group discounts, call 715-836-2787.

The Artists Series is supported in part by grants from the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the State of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts. Wisconsin Public Radio and Community Television have contributed generous promotional support. Best Western Trail Lodge Hotel & Suites, 715-838-9989, at 3340 Mondovi Road is the exclusive accommodations partner for the Artists Series.

Funded by the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the Artists Series is administered by the Activities and Programs office.
