Set for April 24 at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: April 12, 2007

A screening and discussion
of the film "War Zone," a documentary that personalizes the issue of harassment, will take place beginning at 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, before the "Take Back the Night" rally. More information.

EAU CLAIRE — April is designated as Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 24, the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will hold its annual "Take Back the Night" event to raise awareness and support for victims of sexual assault. Participants will gather at the clock tower on the Campus Mall.

This event will allow community and campus members to speak out against sexual violence by sharing their stories and reclaiming the night with a group march down Water Street.

Ann McKinley, program development coordinator for the Center for Awareness of Sexual Assault at UW-Eau Claire, Amanda Mondlock, victim services advocate for CASA, and Rexann Lemke, of University Police, will be speakers at "Take Back the Night." The event will feature musical performances by Audacious, and refreshments will be served starting at 6:45 p.m.

"Sexual assault is a real issue," said Erin Polnaszek, coordinator for the Women's and Gender Equity Center. "It's not an issue that happens to people we don't know or who live far away it's an issue that happens right here, to our closest friends."

Polnaszek encourages all members of the campus and community to attend and help put an end to sexual violence.

Sponsors for this year's event include CASA, College Feminists, WAGE, the Student Wellness and Advocacy Team, University Police, and Student Services Commission.

For more information about the event or to become actively involved in "Take Back the Night." contact Polnaszek at 715-225-4571 or wage@uwec.edu.
