EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire senior Michelle Olson, Eau Claire, received a Wisconsin State Reading Association Student Scholarship Award at that organization's recent state convention in recognition of her interest and involvement in promoting reading.

"I really appreciated the scholarship award as it provided me the opportunity to attend the entire three-day convention and enabled me to learn from professionals in the field of reading on a wide range of topics," Olson said, noting that she was honored to be able to come back and share all the information she learned with fellow colleagues who are interested in reading.

Olson, an elementary education major, has worked on numerous projects to promote reading. She is an active committee member of WSRA, working on the Pre-Service Teacher Committee, and also consulting with the Reading and Technology Committee.

Olson also attends regular meetings and workshops with reading professionals throughout the state to increase her knowledge of the field.

In addition to her work through WSRA, Olson has tutored elementary and middle school students and English Language Learners, working on reading, homework and Book Adventures projects.

Most recently she has been involved with a research study on classroom management with a focus on management in literacy lessons.

Olson said that reading is extremely important to her because she feels that everyone needs good reading skills to succeed.

"It connects you to the world," Olson said. "The ability to read is what opens the door to opportunities in life."

Olson received her award at the WSRA Convention awards reception held in Milwaukee on Feb. 8.
