Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs

RELEASED: April 9, 2007

Steven TallantEAU CLAIRE — Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich announced today that he has named Dr. Steven Tallant as the new provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

"Dr. Tallant has a tremendous knowledge of and deep love for UW-Eau Claire," Levin-Stankevich said. "In addition to his knowledge of our institution, he also has an excellent understanding of the UW System and is greatly respected by his System colleagues as well as members of the Board of Regents. Dr. Tallant has my full confidence as he begins his duties as the university's chief academic officer."

Tallant, who has served as interim provost and vice chancellor at UW-Eau Claire since April 2005, surfaced as a top candidate in a highly competitive national search that was facilitated by an elected campus search and screen committee, Levin-Stankevich said.

"I consider it a great honor and privilege to be asked to serve this university in the permanent role of provost and vice chancellor," Tallant said. "This is an exceptional university with a very bright future. I'm looking forward to working with all members of the campus community to move UW-Eau Claire forward under the leadership of Chancellor Levin-Stankevich."

Levin-Stankevich said Tallant's knowledge of UW-Eau Claire's people and programs will be a tremendous asset as the university develops an inclusive, effective and engaging strategic plan.

"Our campus community will define its priorities, identify what makes us distinctive and build a plan that will take us where we need to go to succeed in the rapidly changing field of higher education," Levin-Stankevich said. "As we engage in this rigorous strategic planning process, Dr. Tallant's knowledge and leadership will be critical."

As the university's chief academic officer, Tallant will be the leader and administrator of the university's undergraduate, graduate and professional academic programs. He will oversee 32 academic departments among four colleges. His duties will include evaluating all faculty and academic staff personnel actions and administering a budget of more than $50 million. The deans of the colleges, the associate and assistant vice chancellors, the registrar and the director of admissions will report directly to Tallant. Tallant will report directly to the chancellor.

Tallant came to UW-Eau Claire in 1994 as a professor of social work. He was named associate vice chancellor and director of graduate programs in June 2000. He served as interim provost from April 2004-November 2004 and then returned to his associate vice chancellor position in November 2004. He continued in the associate vice chancellor position until April 2005, when he was again named interim provost and vice chancellor.

An accomplished teacher and scholar, Tallant has received numerous awards and other honors for his work at UW-Eau Claire. In March 2006, the Student Senate presented him with the Ronald N. Satz Award for Student Advocacy: Outstanding Service to the Student Body. He also received the university's Excellence in Teaching Award in August 1999 and was named Professor of the Year by the university's Future Teachers' Club in 1997.

Tallant said he appreciates the support he has received from the campus community during his years in the interim position, as well as during the selection process for the permanent position.

Prior to coming to UW-Eau Claire, Tallant held numerous positions in the U.S. Air Force. He served in the Air Force from 1978-1991. At the time he left the military, he was chief of Air Force Family Research, working from the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
