Dinner at Native Bay to Benefit UW-Eau Claire
Latin American Studies Program

RELEASED: April 6, 2007

LAS dinner invitationEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's Latin American studies program will host a $100-per-plate fundraiser dinner at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Native Bay Restaurant in Chippewa Falls. A cash bar and Latin American hors d'oeuvres start at 5:30 p.m.

The fundraiser will benefit students in the LAS program by helping the UW-Eau Claire Foundation endow the Latin American Studies Scholarship Fund. The fund needs an additional $5,400 to reach the $10,000 endowment level, said Dr. Eva Santos-Phillips, LAS coordinator and professor of foreign languages.

The dinner will feature food from various Latin American countries. Chef Nathan Berg from Native Bay will create the menu with the input of LAS committee members. The meal will consist of five to six courses with wine pairings. Food from countries in Central America, the Caribbean, Argentina, Brazil and a Mexican "mole" will be featured on the menu.

Caribbean and other tropical drinks such as margaritas and caipirias will be featured during cocktail hour, said fundraiser committee member and UW-Eau Claire senior Kate Bero, Appleton.

According to Santos-Phillips, for the 34 years the LAS program has been in existence, students in the program have not been able to apply for a scholarship in their LAS major or minor.

"I think it is time for this to happen," said Santos-Phillips. "We have wonderful students and they should have this opportunity."

To make reservations for the fundraiser, call Native Bay at 715-726-0434. For more information, contact Santos-Phillips at 715-836-4215 or Bero at 952-594-2418.
