UW-Eau Claire Staff Designer Wins Awards
for Work She Did as a Student Designer

RELEASED: April 6, 2007

Best in Show poster in ACUI competition
Overall Best in Show design in ACUI competition, designed by UW-Eau Claire student.

EAU CLAIRE — In addition to receiving two first-place awards, the work of a University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student graphic designer was voted overall Best in Show in the 2007 association-wide promotion and marketing competition of the Association of College Unions International. Winning entries were exhibited and the awards presented at ACUI's 87th annual conference March 25-28 in Atlanta.

The awards recognize publications that Kristine Norberg designed for the 2006-07 season of The Forum, one of the nation's longest continuing lecture series, and the Artists Series, which brings world-class performance to the university community.

Norberg designed the publications to promote season and single ticket sales; provide detailed information about each individual event; and create a visual identity that conveys the individual events being part of a diverse series. She received the first-place awards for her 24-page season booklet, and for a promotional campaign that included a season booklet, season poster, magazine ad, and two event posters (Evidence Dance Company, David Orr).

All of the publications contained the same motif a dark-brown background with colorful interconnecting circles of varying line widths. The design was inspired by droplets falling into water, creating a ripple effect that alludes to the impact the programs have on the university community. Collaged photo imagery was combined with this line art, mixing reality and abstraction. Booklet corners were rounded, echoing the text information boxes that appeared consistently on each page and contained detailed information each event. These text boxes were consistently placed outside the central collaged photo/art layouts and print on plain white, providing maximum readability.

From Milaca, Minn., Norberg has been employed in the University Centers since January 2005. She designed the publications while working as a student designer under the direction of information design program manager Juelie Sires. Norberg received a bachelor of arts degree in graphic design from UW-Eau Claire in December and continued working on the information design staff as a limited-term employee after her graduation.

The University Centers is a Student Services unit of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a longtime member of the Association of College Unions International. ACUI has served the college union and student activities field since 1914, and its members represent nearly 1,000 campuses around the world. The annual Steal This Idea competition awards excellence in college union and student activities graphics and marketing materials.

Other institutions recognized with first-place awards in the promotion and marketing competition include the University of Arizona, California State Polytechnic University, the University of Cincinnati, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Indiana University-Bloomington, the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, The Ohio State University, Oregon State University, the University of North Texas, the University of Southern California, Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and State University of New York at Geneseo. A complete list of award winners is available online and the winners will be featured in the July 2007 issue of ACUI's magazine, The Bulletin.
