EAU CLAIRE — In the mid-1980s, three University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music students, Lorie Carpenter-Niska, Kurt Niska and Michael Swedberg, formed the basis of an extra-curricular vocal group. That group, now known as Five By Design, will return to Eau Claire with a performance of its newest production, "Stay Tuned," at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 19, at the State Theatre in downtown Eau Claire.

The highly acclaimed vocal quintet now also includes UW-Eau Claire graduate Terrence Niska and Sheridan Zuther, a University of Missouri-Kansas City alumnus.

Framed in the style of television variety shows of the period, "Stay Tuned" draws upon the music and icons of the 1950s and 1960s, featuring the music of Perry Como, Rosemary Clooney, Bobby Darin, the Four Ladds and the Tokens to create a family show.

"Stay Tuned" is a visual and audio experience filled with memories. For those who don't remember those early years, "Stay Tuned" is a glimpse into a medium that changed the face of American musical culture.

Five By Design's reputation has grown steadily. They have appeared with 176 symphony orchestras at more than 500 performing arts centers, and they have been backed by big bands throughout the United States and Canada.

The Washington Post called Five By Design's Kennedy Center debut with the National Symphony Orchestra "one of the best NSO pops performances of the season."

On numerous occasions, Five By Design has called upon Robert Baca, UW Eau Claire head of jazz studies, to coordinate the personnel for its big bands. The shows have been a training tool for many UW-Eau Claire students.

Five By Design also shared its talents on a recent recording by UW-Eau Claire's Jazz Ensemble I, "Christmas Day My Favorite Day," which also featured singer and UW-Eau Claire alumnus Michael Andrew. Five by Design was featured in "Winter Wonderland" and a Crosby/Andrew Sisters arrangement of "Jingle Bells."

The quintet invites high school and collegiate choral directors to bring their vocal music students to see and meet the members of Five By Design.

Tickets for "Stay Tuned" are available at the Eau Claire Regional Arts Center box office at 316 Eau Claire St. or by calling 715-832-2787 during weekday business hours of 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
