for the Week of Oct. 2

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire music and theatre arts department will present the following musical performances the week beginning Monday, Oct. 2. All events are free and open to the public.

Tuesday, Oct. 3:

  • Junior John Raymond, Golden Valley, Minn., will perform a trumpet recital at 5 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. He will be accompanied by pianist Anne Kubiatowicz. The program will open with Alexander Arutunian's Concerto for Trumpet and Piano and "Someone to Watch Over Me" by Gershwin. The Gershwin piece will include a string arrangement by Raymond and will be conducted by Nobuyoshi Yasuda, associate professor of music. Strings in the setting include seniors Allison Bulger, Mendota Heights, Minn., and Laura Wenzel, Appleton, on violins; sophomore Martha Seroogy, De Pere, on viola; and junior Sarah Larson, Appleton, on cello. Raymond will conclude with "Vale la Pena," an original work of his own.

Thursday, Oct. 5:

  • Guest Artist Frank Sidorfsky will present a Basset Horn recital at 7:30 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall. Assisting Sidorfsky will be Richard Fletcher, professor of music, on clarinet; Barbara Wimunc-Pearson, professor of music, on piano; and Tim Lane, professor of music, on flute. The concert is set to open with Trio in E-flat by Mozart, followed by Adagio und Variationen by Caspar Kummer. Sidorfsky also will feature the music of Giovanni Simone Mayr, Julin Menndez and Mendelssohn. Sidorfsky has performed in sixteen states as well as Victoria, Canada. He also spent four years in Navy Music, which included an eighteen-month tour of the Mediterranean.

Sunday, Oct. 8:

  • Christa Garvey, assistant professor of music, will hold an oboe recital at 2 p.m. in Phillips Recital Hall. The recital will feature works by Bach, Schuman and Bla Bartk. Garvey will conclude the concert with Etudes for Solo Oboe by Gilles Silvestrini and Sonata for Oboe and Piano by Francis Poulenc. Lori Cruciani and assistant professor of music Namji Kim will assist Garvey on piano.
  • Robert Knight, professor of music, will present "The Poems and Songs of Alfred Edward Housman," a voice recital, at 5 p.m. in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. Knight will be assisted by Barbara Young on piano; senior Holly Samson, Elk Mound, on oboe; senior Allison Bulger, Mendota Heights, Minn., and junior Mary Heimerman, Shoreview, Minn., on violins; Martha Seroogy, De Pere, on viola; and senior Hayley Nelson, Minneapolis, Minn., on cello. Professor of English Martin Wood also will read the poems. Musical settings of Housman's poems are by Willie B. Manson, Graham Peel, George Butterworth, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Arnold Bax, Ivor Gurney, Arthur Somervell and John Ireland.
