RELEASED: Sept. 26, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will host the Chippewa Valley School Press Association's annual Fall Journalism Conference on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

The event is sponsored by the department of communication and journalism with support from organizations including the Leader-Telegram, Jostens and Lifetouch.

The conference is intended for middle and high school students, along with their school's new and experienced advisers. It will include the basics of newspaper and yearbook production, advanced journalism techniques, photography for beginners and photojournalism.

Participants from across Wisconsin will be given the opportunity to attend instructional workshop sessions with industry professionals and university faculty. Hands-on workshops will focus on writing and reporting, photography, developing yearbooks, newspapers, magazines and more.

Keynote speaker Bobby Hawthorne will deliver an opening speech titled "Like it or Not, You Need to Know How to Write" at 8:30 a.m. in Davies Theatre. Hawthorne directed the Interscholastic League Press Conference, Texas' student press association, from 1978 to 1997, and he is currently a popular instructor at journalism workshops and seminars nationwide.

He has been published in every national scholastic press association periodical and is the author of "The Coverage of Interscholastic Sports and The Radical Write," a book about reporting and writing for student publications, and a book about the history of Texas Longhorn football for the University of Texas Press.

Among other awards, Hawthorne was named a lifetime member by the Texas Association of Journalism Educators in 1991, and in 2000 he received TAJE's Trailblazer Award.

Registration for the conference runs from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m. in the Skylight Lounge of UW-Eau Claire's Davies Center. The conference will end at 1:30 p.m. following an awards assembly.

Cost is $5 per student and $8 per adviser for CVSPA members. Non-member cost is $10 per student and $16 per adviser.
