Latin American Studies Week is Part of
Hispanic Heritage Month at UW-Eau Claire

EAU CLAIRE — October is Hispanic Heritage Month and the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire will celebrate with a number of events, including Latin American Studies Week Oct. 9-13. Hosted by the Latin American Studies Program, the week will feature presentations and discussions, food, music and dance.

Beginning Sunday, Oct. 1, members of the Student Organization of Latinos will decorate a display case in McIntyre Library with information on Latin American literature and art. Three additional events for Hispanic Heritage Month are scheduled for Oct. 4, 16 and 19. All events are open to the public.

  • Wednesday, Oct. 4, 8:05 p.m. Movie "Amores Perros" (Love is a Bitch), directed by Alejandro Gonlez Irritu, Mexico (2000), in Room 314 of Hibbard Hall. In Spanish with English subtitles, the screening is free and open to the public.
  • Monday, Oct. 9, 5-7 p.m. Opening plenary speech and reception, Dr. Thomas Walker: "Latin America in the Talons of the Eagle: Reflections of a Grumpy Old Academic," Dulany Inn, Davies Center
  • Tuesday, Oct. 10, 4-5:30 p.m. Round table presentation and discussion, "Bolivia: Perspectives of Bolivian Students Currently at UW-Eau Claire." A panel of four students will present their interpretations and opinions regarding current events in their native country. A questions and answer session will follow. Presidents Room, Davies Center
  • Wednesday, Oct. 11, 4-5:30 p.m. Round table presentation and discussion Two Student Research Projects Eric Duwe: "Creating ESL Opportunities in Rural Wisconsin" and Marcy Reynolds: "The Latin American Community and Member Interactions with Social Services," Tamarack Room, Davies Center
  • Thursday, Oct. 12, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Sabor Latino buffet luncheon, Dulany Inn, Davies Center. The university community is invited to a Latino-themed buffet lunch, with many Latin American countries represented. Cost is $7.50 per person. Reserve a seat by calling Dining Services at 715-836-2632.
  • Thursday, Oct. 12, 6-7:30 p.m. Round table presentation and discussion, "Volunteering, Service Learning, and Internship Possibilities in Latin America," Alumni Room, Davies Center
  • Friday, Oct. 13, 7-10 p.m. Latin American popular music and dance, Higher Ground, Crest Wellness Center
  • Monday, Oct. 16, 4-6 p.m. Dr. Enrique Figueroa, adviser to the provost for Latino Affairs at UW-Milwaukee, will present "The Future of Latinos in Higher Education." A light buffet reception will follow. Both in Room 103 of Hibbard Hall.
  • Thursday, Oct. 19, 4-6 p.m. Dialogue on Diversity "Student Thoughts on Latino Immigration." A panel of Latin American students will discuss their views on current immigration issues and possible consequences in the Alumni Room of Davies Center. Refreshments will be served.

Latin American Studies Week and Hispanic Heritage Month events are sponsored by the UW-Eau Claire Foundation, Office of Multicultural Affairs, Office of Student Development and Diversity, College of Arts and Sciences, Center for International Education, the departments of economics, foreign languages, history and political science and the Latin American Studies program.
