'Everything is Illuminated'
to Screen at UW-Eau Claire

RELEASED: Sept. 11, 2006

Everything is Illuminated posterEAU CLAIRE — "Everything Is Illuminated" (2005) will screen Sept. 14-17 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The directing debut of actor Liev Schreiber, who also adapted Jonathan Safran Foer's complex novel for the screen, the film will be presented at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.

"'Everything is Illuminated' begins in goofiness and ends in silence and memory," wrote film critic Roger Ebert. "How it gets from one to the other is the subject of the film, a journey undertaken by three men and a dog into the secrets of the past."

Elijah Wood stars as a compulsive young writer who catalogues his family history and preserves its artifacts in carefully labeled Ziploc bags. He sets off to capture an elusive memory, traveling to the Ukraine to find the woman who saved his grandfather from the Nazis. The hilariously tortured English of his guide Alex (Eugene Hutz) narrates this journey of discovery. Boris Laskin costars as Alex's grandfather, the curmudgeonly driver with a seeing-eye dog he calls Sammy Davis Junior Junior.

"'Everything is Illuminated' lives in the present, except for memories and enigmatic flashbacks to the Second World War," Ebert wrote. "The gift that Schreiber brings to the material is his ability to move us from the broad satire of the early scenes to the solemnity of the final ones. The first third of the film could be inspired by Fellini's 'Amarcord,' the last third by Bergman's darkest hours."

The 106-minute film is rated PG-13.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727, in Davies Center's east lobby, and will be sold at the door.

The film is sponsored by the University Activities Commission of the UW-Eau Claire Student Senate.
