EAU CLAIRE — An Eau Claire veterinarian has been memorialized with a $25,000 endowed scholarship in his name at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

The Jay Mettler Pre-Veterinary Medicine Scholarship will provide an annual $1,000 scholarship to an outstanding pre-veterinary major at UW-Eau Claire who plans to enroll in the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Veterinary Medicine. Mettler, a 1982 Memorial High School graduate, earned a bachelor of science and a veterinary medicine degree from UW-Madison. He was killed in a snowmobile accident in February.

The pre-veterinary medicine scholarship was established by Jay's wife, Amy, and their three children. The scholarship honors his perseverance in following his lifelong dream of becoming a veterinarian and his love of animals, both wild ones he brought home as well as his own domestic pets.

"Jay's love of animals and commitment to their well-being as a veterinarian will be honored as a result of this generous gift," said Carole Halberg, president of the UW-Eau Claire Foundation. "This gift will make it possible for students who have the same passion for animals and their care to follow in Jay's footsteps."

Mettler practiced veterinary medicine in Chetek for two years after graduating from UW-Madison. He then returned to Eau Claire to work at Westgate Animal Hospital. He purchased the practice in 1997.

"Jay was a sentimental man who cared very much for his family as well as the animals and people with whom he dealt," said Margo Mettler, his mother. "Jay had to overcome the disappointment of a first rejection on his application for vet school. By getting a job, repeating some classes and reapplying, he learned valuable lessons in perseverance and the need for hard work. He would be pleased to help others who also understand these values so that they might realize their own goals of becoming veterinarians."

The Mettler gift is recognized as a contribution to Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's comprehensive campaign to benefit UW-Eau Claire's people and programs.
