EAU CLAIRE — University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Interim Chancellor Emerita Vicki Lord Larson, who retired in May from her duties as interim chancellor, left behind a legacy not only of leadership, but also a $500,000 estate commitment for an endowed scholarship for Wisconsin students.

The James Larson and Vicki Lord Larson Fund will provide renewable scholarships for financially needy, high-achieving Wisconsin students. An additional estate gift will support a scholarship for majors in communication sciences and disorders.

The commitment was made in honor of two people Larson believes were responsible for her achievements: her mother, Stella Lord, and her husband, James Larson.

"My mother sacrificed much to send me to college," Larson said. "Jim later became my strongest ally, encouraging me to take constructive risks that helped me achieve advanced degrees and so much more. Support from my mother and husband was the base upon which my success was built. I want to give students like me — high achieving but financially limited — the same supportive framework upon which to succeed."

Larson, who was a first-generation college student, devoted most of her career to UW-Eau Claire as a professor, administrator and most recently as interim chancellor. She first became associated with UW-Eau Claire in 1973 as an assistant professor of communication disorders. She later was promoted to professor and served as chair of the communication disorders department from 1978-83. In 1984 Larson was named assistant dean for graduate studies and university research. In 1989 she was promoted to associate dean, a position she held until 1991 when she became dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research at UW-Oshkosh. From 1994 until 2000, she served as the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at UW-Oshkosh. From 2000-01 she served at UW System. From 2001-04 she was an acquisitions editor for Eau Claire-based Thinking Publications before taking a leave of absence to serve as interim chancellor of UW-Eau Claire.

The Larson commitment is recognized as a contribution to Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's ongoing comprehensive campaign to benefit UW-Eau Claire's people and programs.
