Indie Thriller 'Primer' to Screen
at UW-Eau Claire Oct. 26-29

RELEASED: Oct. 17, 2006

Scene from "Primer"EAU CLAIRE — "Primer" (2004), an indie thriller that captured the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival, will screen Oct. 26-29 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. "One of the most inventive films ever made for pennies on the Hollywood dollar" (Premiere), Shane Carruth's debut film will be presented at 6 and 8:30 p.m. Thursday through Sunday in Davies Theatre.

Two men (Shane Carruth, David Sullivan) are building a machine in their suburban Dallas garage. They know it will be important and powerful, but they don't know what it does.

"A repeat-viewing brain twister to file along-side millennial puzzle films like 'Mulholland Drive' and 'Memento,' Shane Carruth's 'Primer' unites physics and metaphysics in an ingenious guerrilla reinvention of cinematic science fiction," wrote the Village Voice. "At once clinical and lyrical, practically compactor-pressed at a mere 78 minutes, 'Primer' exists in a haze of naturalistic confusion. ... the nerdiest and most plausible time-warp fantasy that movies have ever dreamed up."

"Carruth wrote, directed and edited the movie, composed the score, and starred in it," reported film critic Roger Ebert. "The budget was reportedly around $7,000, but that was enough: The movie never looks cheap, because every shot looks as it must look. In a New York Times interview, Carruth said he filmed largely in his own garage, and at times he was no more sure what he was creating than his characters were. 'Primer' won the award for best drama at Sundance 2004."

Rated PG-13, "Primer" also won Sundance's Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize for science-themed movies.

Admission is $2 for International Film Society members and UW-Eau Claire faculty and staff and $1 for UW-Eau Claire students. Tickets are available at the Service Center, 715-836-3727, in Davies Center's east lobby, and will be sold at the door.

The film is sponsored by the International Film Society.
