Women's Studies Celebrates
Initiation of New Major

RELEASED: Oct. 11, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — Faculty, friends and students of the newly initiated University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire women's studies major are invited to gather during the week of Oct.16 to honor the foundations of women's studies — the roots of feminist learning, grassroots action and activism, and celebration of community.

Tuesday, Oct. 17:

  • Noon-4 p.m., "A Day of Learning" — Tamarack Room of Davies Center. Celebrate and learn of local organizations on and off campus that make a difference in addressing social justice concerns. Crossroads Booksellers and the UW-Eau Claire Bookstore will have selected books available for purchase. Refreshments will be served.
  • 2-3:15 p.m. — informal conversation with Marge Piercy, feminist foremother and internationally known author. Davies Theatre.

Thursday, Oct. 19:

  • 4-7 p.m., "An Evening of Celebration" — Refreshments will be served in The Dulany, Davies Center. Celebrate community with those instrumental in developing the women's studies major and those passionate about being part of it.

Friday, Oct. 20:

  • Varied times throughout the day — "A Day of Action." Commit to action by lending a hand to one of several area non-profit and grassroots organizations in making a difference. Sign-up sheets will be available at the "Day of Learning" and in the WMNS office all week. All volunteer work will qualify for service learning hours.

Members of the WMNS liaison committee are Laurel Kieffer, chair, lecturer, women's studies; Melissa Bonstead-Bruns, associate professor, sociology; Lois Helland, lecturer, biology; Susan Turell, program coordinator, women's studies; Robin Umber, assistant professor, curriculum and instruction; and Christine Webster, service associate, Office of Multicultural Affairs and WMNS student.
