UW-Eau Claire will host its first Authors Celebration to honor the scholarly and creative achievements of faculty and academic staff. The event will run from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Oct. 3 in the Tamarack Room of Davies Center. Forty recently published authors will display and discuss their work.

Jill Prushiek, associate professor and field experience director for UW-Eau Claire's College of Education and Human Sciences, received the Jeff Wendt Appreciation Award for her volunteer efforts with Indianhead Area Special Olympics. The award, named for a Special Olympics athlete who died in 1993, recognizes an individual who makes the most impact on the program throughout the year. As an eight-year member of the area management team for Special Olympics, Prushiek helps plan events, works them and recruits others to help, including many university students, faculty and staff. UW-Eau Claire's Oct. 2-8 Homecoming Week will include activities, a parade and a football game. The Homecoming weekend festivities are expected to bring thousands of alumni back to Eau Claire. Events that may interest the media include:

  • The Homecoming parade will begin at 10 a.m. Oct. 7 at Grand and First avenues, moving south to Water Street and ending at Second Avenue. The Blugold Marching Band will lead the parade, which also will include performances from high school bands.
  • The alumni pre-game Homecoming festival, "Blugold Fever Fest," will begin at 11 a.m. in Carson Park. The Blugold Marching Band will perform.
  • New this year is The Fifth Quarter, a free post-game party. Following the game, the Blugold Marching Band will lead fans to the tent below the stadium for the gathering, which will include music, food and beverages.
  • The annual Adopt-a-Block neighborhood clean up will again be Sunday afternoon. Students will pick up trash left from the weekend's festivities in the Historic Randall Park Neighborhood.
  • Nursing Alumni Homecoming Walk will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Nursing building. A breakfast for nursing alumni will follow.
  • The Education Alumni Roll and Stroll will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot west of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

UW- Eau Claire will host the Chippewa Valley School Press Association's annual Fall Journalism Conference from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Oct. 4. The conference attracts middle and high school students from throughout Wisconsin. It will focus on the basics of newspaper and yearbook production, journalism techniques, photography and photojournalism. Industry professionals and university faculty will lead the sessions.
