Symphonic Choir to Perform
in Gantner Concert Hall Dec. 3

RELEASED: Nov. 29, 2006

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Symphonic Choir will present a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center. The choir will perform along side the University Symphony Orchestra.

Alan Rieck, associate professor of music, will direct the ensemble as they open with "Magnificat" by John Rutter. Soprano Mitra Sadeghpour, assistant professor of music, will be the featured soloist for the seven-movement work.

The second half of the concert also will feature soprano soloist Sadeghpour in Rutter's "Requiem," which will be performed in memory of Josef Gapko and Morris Hayes. Gapko, a UW-Eau Claire student, son of Andrea and Laurie Gapko, died July 10. Hayes, a UW-Eau Claire emeritus professor of music and theatre arts, died in June.

"The two works to be performed have a great appeal for the modern audience since they have some wonderful variety," said Rieck. "There are lyric melodies, high energy rhythms and many wonderful musical colors that effectively express the wide range of human experiences throughout the pieces. A choir of 136 voices, soprano soloist, and orchestra offers a tremendous opportunity for a composer to express hope, joy, sadness, anticipation, beauty and a variety of other things quite effectively."

The Symphonic Choir performs two major concerts with the University Symphony Orchestra each year. The ensemble is comprised of both university students and community members. The group specializes in the study and performance of music composed for chorus and orchestra and in recent years has featured Mozart's "Requiem," Poulenc's "Gloria," Brahms' "Requiem," opera choruses by Mozart, Verdi and Bizet, and Orft's "Carmina Burana."

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $5 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
