EAU CLAIRE — A nontraditional University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student has established a scholarship in memory of her father. Jennifer Thomas, Eleva, a UW-Eau Claire art major, wanted the scholarship to reflect the support her father, Frank Thomas, provided to her. Frank Thomas died August 15, 1997.

The Frank A. Thomas Memorial Scholarship will benefit nontraditional art students at UW-Eau Claire.

"As a nontraditional student, I recognize how much effort is required to achieve a degree. My father was a strong believer in higher education. I just want to share some of the generosity, encouragement, and support that he showed me with others who are pursuing self-improvement through education.

The $250 scholarship will be awarded based on a student's artistic potential and performance. If the recipient has art selected for the UW-Eau Claire juried art show, the recipient will have the option of the art department using the funds to purchase the art work for the university's permanent art collection. If the recipient does not have work entered in the art show or prefers not to sell it, the award shall be treated as a scholarship.

"As a nontraditional student, Jennifer Thomas is very concerned that recognition and encouragement be particularly given to other nontraditional students," said Steve Terwilliger, chair of the UW-Eau Claire art department. "Our department has a large number of nontraditional students who are strongly active in the studio arts. We are indeed fortunate that Jennifer is excited about building the strength and diversity of support for our nontraditional students while still a student herself. This is a most generous act and a very fitting tribute to the memory of her father."

The Thomas gift to UW-Eau Claire is recognized as a contribution to Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's comprehensive campaign to benefit UW-Eau Claire's people and programs.
