Peer Diversity Educators sponsor
Reach Out for Respect Week activities

RELEASED: Nov. 22, 2006

PDE logoEAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Peer Diversity Educators have designated the week of Nov. 27-Dec.1 as Reach Out for Respect Week.

The week is an effort to promote respect both in the local and campus community and internationally. This year, Reach Out for Respect Week will be focused on making a difference through a school supply drive and programming in the residence halls. A program titled "Privilege Walk," which looks at the privileges society gives or denies to its various members, will be offered in Sutherland Hall at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28; in Oak Ridge at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29; in Governors Hall at 9 p.m. Nov. 29; and in Putnam Hall at 9 p.m. Nov. 29.

PDE coordinator senior Heather Hanewall, Beloit, said that "Privilege Walk" gives students the opportunity to understand the intricacies of social privilege as the PDE's read a series of questions that ask students to step forward or backward based on their own personal experiences.

"This intense and sometimes emotional program can help us realize what we can do to minimize the disparities between people in our society," Hanewall said.

PDE will also be collecting new or good quality used school supplies and soccer equipment to send to a rural school, Lucas Memorial Primary School in Durban, South Africa, as part of Reach Out for Respect Week. Donation boxes will be placed in most of the residence halls and in Davies Center in front of the Diversity Resource Center, located across from the University Bookstore. The group will be accepting money for school uniforms as well, and Oak Ridge Hall will hold a spaghetti dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, to raise funds for the school.

Hanewall said uniforms are required for the students, but many families cannot afford them because they are single-parent families or child-run families as a result of AIDS.
