UW-Eau Claire's Jazz I to Perform
Christmas Concert Dec. 1

EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin- Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble I will perform a Christmas concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.

Jazz I, under the direction of Robert Baca, professor of music, will begin the performance with "Maytes Allen Room Caper" by Michael Mossman. The ensemble also will perform "Journey Home" by Maria Schneider and Mossman's "John Coltrane Suite." The first half will conclude with "Let It Snow," arranged by Kyle Newmaster.

The second half will feature more traditional Christmas tunes, including "Good King Wenceslas" and "Coventry Carol." Christmas Day, My Favorite Day" and "Mistletoe Mambo," two works by UW-Eau Claire alumnus Michael Andrew, also will be featured in the performance. The final selections by Jazz I will be "Stan Kenton Christmas" by Ralph Carmichael and "Christmas is My Favorite Time of Year," arranged by Michael Crotty. The second set will feature vocal solos by Mark Koxlien and junior Katie Schultz, Coon Rapids, Minn., and an alto saxophone solo by Evan Benidt.

The performance also will mark the release of Jazz I's first Christmas CD, titled "Jazz in Clear Water: Christmas Day, My Favorite Day." Jazz I has recorded a CD each year for the past decade, with two nominated for Grammy Awards: "Jazz in Clear Wate Harpoon" and "Jazz in Clear Water Things to Come." Jazz I is recognized as one of the premiere jazz ensembles in the United States. The ensemble has received the Down Beat Award for best college jazz ensemble five times in the last eight years. The ensemble has recorded eleven CDs to date.

Tickets, available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $5 for the general public; $4 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and $1.50 for students with a university ID.
