RELEASED: Nov. 20, 2006

girl reading a bookEAU CLAIRE — The University Bookstore at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is working with the Friends of the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in its Give a Kid a Book project for 2006. Now in its 12th year, the project distributes new, unwrapped books to area agencies that serve children and teens. Other community partners in this year's book drive are Memorial High School's Teen Literacy Initiative and the Mortar Board honor society at UW-Eau Claire.

The University Bookstore will begin accepting books Monday, Dec. 4, and will offer discounts on clothing and gift purchases to those who make donations. Those who give one book will receive a coupon good for 10 percent off the price of any one clothing or gift item. A donation of two books will be rewarded with a 15 percent discount, and those who give three books will receive 20 percent off the price of one in-stock item of their choice.

The bookstore will forward donations to the Friends of the Library on Thursday, Dec. 14, but will continue to accept donations through Friday, Dec. 22.

The Friends of the Library suggest board and cloth books for babies, easy picture books for children ages two to five, and chapter books for ages six to 14. For older children, reference books (atlases, dictionaries), novels and nonfiction books for leisure reading are recommended. More information about the Give a Kid a Book project is available from Mary Hable at 715-559-2925.

More information about the University Bookstore's part in the book drive is available from bookstore manager Joseph Picconatto or operations manager Susan Markes at 715-836-2171.

Located on the lower level of Davies Center, the University Bookstore is open Monday through Thursday 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
