EAU CLAIRE — The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Jazz Ensemble III will present a concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, in Gantner Concert Hall of the Haas Fine Arts Center.
The concert, a tribute to Charles Mingus, will be directed by Jeffery Crowell, assistant professor of music. The concert will include Mingus' "Haitian Fight Song," "Children's Hour of Dream," "Ecclusiastics" and "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat," all arranged by Sy Johnson. The ensemble also will perform arrangements by Steve Slagle of Mingus' "Gunslinging Bird" and "Fables of Faubus." Jack Walrath's arrangement of Mingus' "Duke Ellington's Sound of Love" also will be presented.
Mingus, a virtuoso bass player, accomplished pianist, bandleader and composer, has been called one of the most important figures in twentieth century American music. He toured with bands like Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory and Lionel Hampton and recorded with some of the biggest names of 1950s music, including Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Bud Powell, Art Tatum and Duke Ellington. Mingus recorded over a hundred albums and wrote over three hundred scores in his lifetime.
Tickets, available at the University Service Center, 715-836-3727 or 800-949-UWEC, are $4 for the general public; $3 for those 62 and older, children 17 and younger and faculty and staff with a university ID; and free for students with a university ID.
