Colcannon to Perform Two Holiday Concerts
at UW-Eau Claire Nov. 28 and 29

RELEASED: Nov. 14, 2006

ColcannonEAU CLAIRE — Colcannon will perform two Celtic holiday concerts Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 28 and 29, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Artists Series will present the five-person acoustic band at 7:30 p.m. both evenings in Schofield Auditorium.

Radio Limerick described Colcannon as "a band with its roots in tradition but its eyes on the future." Playing old and new music in the Irish tradition, Colcannon has developed a unique contemporary style that remains in firm touch with the heart and essence of traditional Celtic music. Colcannon's appeal crosses lines of age, gender and ethnic background. Presented through the beautiful wealth of traditional Irish music — all-acoustic instrumentation, traditional as well as original tunes, with some songs in singer-front man Mick Bolger's native Gaelic language — Colcannon's message is the story of the resilient and joyous human spirit.

The band's musicianship and sheer joy in performing are apparent from the moment the players hit the stage. Colcannon first performed on the Artists Series in 2000, packing the house for two performances which were completely different each evening. Fans of Celtic music may wish to attend both 2006 performances.

The members of the Colorado-based band have performed together for over a decade, and their recordings have received airplay on hundreds of public radio stations across the United States as well as in Europe and Canada. The band's six CDs include "'The Pooka and the Fiddler' & 'Happy as Larry': Two Stories by Colcannon," which received a 2006 Parents' Choice Award for Storytelling Album; "Trad." (2003), an album of all-traditional music and songs; and "Corvus" (2000), which spent several months in the top ten on the National Celtic Radio Chart. The hour-long PBS special, "Colcannon in Concert," has aired nationwide and is available on DVD.

Tickets are $15 for the public, $13 for those 62 and older and UW System or Chippewa Valley Technical College faculty and staff, and $5 for those 17 and younger and UW System or CVTC students. Tickets are available at the Service Center counter in the east lobby of Davies Center and will also be sold at the door.

Patrons may also charge their tickets to MasterCard or Visa when they order by phone. Call 715-836-3727 — or, outside the immediate Eau Claire area, call toll-free 800-949-UWEC. A $3 handling fee will be added to all telephone charge orders.

The Artists Series is supported in part by grants from the Chippewa Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Heartland Fund Program and the Wisconsin Arts Board with funds from the state of Wisconsin and the National Endowment for the Arts, and the University of Wisconsin System Institute on Race and Ethnicity. Wisconsin Public Radio and Community Television have contributed generous promotional support. Best Western Trail Lodge Hotel & Suites (715-838-9989) at 3340 Mondovi Road is the exclusive accommodations partner for the Artists Series.

Funded by the students of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, the Artists Series is administered by the Activities and Programs office.
